The
following are reports by local resident, Darrell Vollert. This will be updated as we receive new
information.
Hello Texbirders,
On June 13th I ran the Burton BBS route. This route begans
at the junction of Sandstone Road and FM1697 north of Burton in Washington County. The entire route
lies in Washington County and runs pretty much
west to east. The route ends on Old Independence
Road at Marcus Road near the Sandy Hill
community. The landscape along the route consists of post oak/juniper
woodlands, pastureland, and mixed hardwood forest. There is a lot of woodland
edge habitat on this route much to the liking of Painted Buntings. A total of
42 species were encountered along the route this year. That number has been
the average count the last three years. Once again the top three species
encountered on the Burton BBS route were Northern Cardinal(128
individuals found at 44 stops), Painted Bunting(76 individuals found at 39
stops), and American Crow(65 individuals at 27 stops). I did not add any new
species to the route bird list this year. Highlights this year for me were
Chuck-will's-widow calling at Stops 1 and 3 along Sandstone Road, Pine
Warbler singing in the pines on the grounds of Rehburg
Lutheran Church along FM1948 near Rehburg Road at
Stop 10, a Greater Roadrunner lazily walking across Rehburg
Road just behind my car at Stop 22, and all those Painted Buntings
encountered along the route again this year! This is the third consecutive
year that I have found a singing Pine Warbler at Stop 10.
Below is the complete bird list for this year's run with the total number of
individuals listed along with the number of stops each species was
encountered.
